The AΩA National Office Staff—Bios
Richard L. Byyny MD, FACP
Dr. Byyny (AΩA, University of Southern California, 1964) became the Executive Director and Editor of The Pharos in November 2010. He previously served as a Member at Large on the AΩA Board of Directors from 1995-1999. Dr. Byyny graduated from the University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1964, completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in NYC in 1969; and an endocrinology fellowship at Vanderbilt University in 1971. He was an Associate Professor of Medicine and head of General Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago. He was Professor of Medicine, Vice Chairman of Medicine, and head of the Division of Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He was President of the Society for General Internal Medicine in 1980-81. He served as the Executive Vice Chancellor of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Colorado, and as the Chancellor of the University of Colorado Boulder from 1997 to 2005. He is Professor Emeritus and Chancellor Emeritus at the University of Colorado. His specialty is internal medicine and endocrinology.
Dee is Chief of Staff and Managing Editor of The Pharos. She joined the National Office in November 2015. Before coming to AΩA, she served the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) as Deputy Executive Director of Enterprise Partnerships where she oversaw the Department's 67 Boards and Commissions, Operations for all 64 Colorado counties, Communications, Legislative Affairs, and Client Services and Controlled Correspondence. Prior to joining CDHS, Dee was the Director of Public Relations and Marketing for Denver Health, Denver's public safety net hospital. She has also served in the Public Affairs Office at the University of Colorado Boulder, and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dee holds a Master's degree in Integrated Marketing Communications from the University of Colorado Boulder, and a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Metropolitan State University of Denver. She has more than 25 years experience working in communications, marketing, advertising and public relations with an emphasis on issues management and crisis communications. Dee is also a LEAN trained Black Belt with extensive experience in process management and the identification and elimination of waste in the work place. She completed Leadership Training through the University of Denver, and is disaster response certified by FEMA.
William F. Nichols
Bill began his AΩA service in 1985 when he joined the Hewlett Foundation as Chief Financial Officer. He continues to serve at the National Office on a part-time basis overseeing finances, investments and other business matters. His duties include working as an ex-officio member and staff member of the AΩA Board of Directors Audit Committee; the lead team member for the annual audit and investment management; a team member for the finalization of the annual 990 tax return, the quarterly profit/loss statement, and the annual budget development and Board recommendations.
Rich Camillieri is the Financial Controller for AΩA. He is a graduate of Regis University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a double major in finance and management. He brings a diverse skill set to the organization with experience in accounting management, investment advising, and a long history of process improvement for efficiency. Rich enjoys being outdoors hiking and camping, playing softball, bowling, and cooking for family and friends.
Laura Yañez-Gounod is the Director of Member and Chapter Services and Communications Manager for AΩA. She comes to AΩA with over 30 years experience of self-employment and has spent the previous 4 years working in both the technology and government sectors. She graduated from California State University Chico with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration/Accounting. In addition to her work, Laura volunteered 14 years with the Boy Scouts of America serving as an Assistant Scout Master, Registrar, Treasurer, taught merit badge classes, and led camping activities. Her leisure time activities include gardening, crochet, embroidery, cooking, and travel.
Libby Appel is the AΩA Programs Manager overseeing all 12 AΩA fellowships, grants, and awards. She graduated from Missouri State University with a bachelor’s degree in Communications. Libby has had a very diverse career path having been a sales representative, flight attendant, stay-at-home Mom, Girl Scout service unit manager, administrative assistant, development coordinator, and office manager. She came to AΩA from the Colorado AIDS Project where she was in charge of the organization’s donor database. She also worked in development raising money for people living with HIV/AIDS, and assisted with events. Libby has never been a millionaire, but knows she’d be great at it!
Becky Knox is the Executive Assistant and Office Manager at the AΩA National Office. She graduated from the University of Colorado at Denver with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Business. She has 13 years of experience in office management and being an executive assistant. Becky’s career path has lead her from insurance sales, (obtaining her licenses in 2004) to new construction roofing sales and production, along with assisting with an apparel launch for a Colorado based yoga company. Her free time has been taken up by her new enjoyment – a little baby girl that was born October 2017. She still enjoys being outside and camping when there is time for it!
